• Flat and open (clear of trees)
• Not irrigable (not high value agriculture)
• Close proximity of Eskom substation and or power lines (pref 132kv)
• Not Environmentally sensitive
• Not in a flood plane

• Approximately 500 hectares required
• Possibility of sharing with neighbours

• Close proximity of organic waste sources (i.e. farms, fruit, industry transformation, energetic crops).
• Pig slurry, chicken or cow manure
• Approximately 60 000 tons of substrate required per year to generate 1MW (largely dependent on the composition of the substrate)

• Constant water flow (~15m³/s – the more the better)
